Popular venue told to make major improvements following inspection
A popular Anglesey pub described as one of the island’s “crown jewels” by TripAdvisor reviewers has been told it needs to make major improvements by food hygiene inspectors.
The Four Crosses in Menai Bridge scored just one out of a possible five marks following a visit by officials on September 29. It was previously rated a three.
Owners of the Penmynydd Road inn were warned they would need to make sweeping changes across the board if they are to get a pass-rating of three or above.
According to the Food Standards Agency the kitchen needed to improve its food handling, including preparation, cooking, re-heating, cooling and storage.
It was also told that the general cleanliness and condition of facilities and building were not up to standards expected and that systems in place to ensure food safety, most usually paperwork. The pub has had mixed reviews from diners in recent months with several calling it over priced, disappointing and mediocre.
One recent visitor complaining that although the venue was welcoming the food did not appear to be homemade.
They wrote: “I had the beef dinner, although plenty of beef you could tell that it had been brought in pre-sliced, and the veg of frozen peas, frozen broad beans and a stem of cauliflower was very disappointing. My wife had the chicken madras with half rice half chips, and again she said it was not homemade and a bit disappointing.
“I know that the gammon a steaks are cooked to order, but spoilt a bit when you get frozen chips, which is why I suppose we don’t go there too often.”
Others said that they believed the negative reviews had been the result of over expectation by diners.
Out of 25 reviews since September 16 have rated excellent with a maximum five out of five. But nearly one in four rated it poor or average.
Reviewing the restaurant for the Daily Post in April 2014, Aaron Taylor said: “A varied menu with tasty fresh food, and a lovely traditional atmosphere, the Four Crosses Inn is excellent value and high on the list for a repeat visit.”
No one from the pub was available for comment when the Daily Post attempted to contact them on Thursday and Friday.
