Anglesey,North Wales - Man jailed after fleecing his grandparents out of £17,000 and attacking partner

Liam Robert Griffiths, 21, of Ffordd Penmynydd, Llanfairpwll appeared at Caernarfon Crown Court today

A father who twice viciously assaulted his now former partner and who also stole £17,000 from his grandparents was jailed for two years.
Liam Robert Griffiths, 21, of Ffordd Penmynydd, Llanfairpwll, Anglesey today appeared for a plea hearing for the burglary after being convicted for the assaults on his former partner and mother of his child by a jury earlier this month.
Prosecutor Elen Owen said the burglary had been listed for trial but Griffiths had changed his plea at the last minute.
Regarding the burglary, prosecutor Elen Owen said Keith and Carys Catterall did not enjoy a good relationship with their grandson Griffiths, allowing him to live in a property near their home but not to enter it.
She said in March last year, Mr Catterall had lost a key to his safe but had remembered the password. In April he found that £17,00 had been taken from the safe but there was no sign of forced entry. Griffiths’ fingerprints were found on the safe and he was arrested.
Miss Owen said the “finger of suspicion” had been pointed at Mrs Catterall and the effect had “ripped the family apart” leaving them feling “betrayed”.
Miss Owen said: “They can no longer live at their home and have put it on the market.”
Regarding the assaults, defending barrister Jonathan Austin said Griffiths “accepted that there had been domestic violence over a period of time” but that both had now since moved on with their lives and had new partners.
Mr Austin described the burlgary as “a sneak theft of a large amount of money” which had never been found. He added that Griffiths was “extremely sorry about the distress he had caused to the family.”
Sentencing Griffiths, His Honour Judge Niclas Parry said he had inflicted “control and utter dominance” on his former partner. He said: “You were a controlling bully.”
The judge said: “You struck her across her face with a stand to carry a baby basket. On a separate occasion you repeatedly bit Llinos Ann Rees to her arm and hand.”
He said the attack was aggravated by the fact that their baby was in the house at the time of the assault. The judge said there had been a “transformation” in Miss Rees’ demeanour when her appearances at the police interview and in person in court was compared.
The judge said: “That is what controlling does. It reduces the self-esteem of women.”
He described Griffiths stealing £17,000 from his grandparents as “desperate” but said he would be given a 15% reduction in his sentence for pleading guilty.
The judge sentenced him to 18 months for the assaults and an additional six months for the burglary. Griffiths will serve half and the rest on licence.

He was handed two restraining orders not to contact Llinos Ann Rees, only through an accepted person and not to contact Keith or Carys Catterall or go within 50 yards of their home.
