THE public are being asked for their views on how to tackle Wrexham’s arson epidemic.
Wrexham’s Public Services Board has been handed a one-off £10,000 fighting fund from the Police and Crime Commissioner’s office in an attempt to get to grips with the problem.
An online consultation has been launched to gather opinion on a project designed to stamp out arson.
A spokesman for the board said: “Arson has been a recurring problem in Wrexham for a number of years.“There is a significantly higher level of deliberate fires in the county compared to the rest of North Wales.
“Over the past five years, 43 per cent of all arson in the North Wales area occurred in Wrexham, and this increased to 47 per cent in 2015.
“Partners are already working together to address this issue, this one-off funding may be used to enhance the current provision.”
The questions being put to residents range from which social media channels should be used to deliver the anti-arson campaign, and who the campaign should be targeted towards.
A bespoke DVD is also being produced “to promote awareness on the danger and affects of setting deliberate fires”, with a view to it being sent to primary and secondary schools in the area.
In February it was revealed Caia Park was one of the areas worst hit by arson, with 55 incidents taking place there during the previous year.
Shortly afterwards, Caia Park Community Council discussed with police chiefs the possibility of offering a reward to the public for information leading to a conviction of the arsonists.
Then North Wales Police and Crime Commissioner, Winston Roddick, decided to give Wrexham Council the £10,000 pot for “community safety initiatives” resulting in this current campaign.
Caia Park Community Council decided to press ahead with offering their own reward of £1,000 for information leading to a successful conviction of arsonists who torched The Venture playground.
Community council clerk Michael Morris confirmed last week the reward offer still stands.
He said: “We have left it open.
“It’s still on the table, so it’s something we would consider if anyone did come forward.”
Mr Morris confirmed the consultation was on the agenda for the community council’s next meeting.
