Thieves stole a prized mascot from a Gwynedd village over the Bank Holiday weekend.
Gwril the Giant is the result of months of work by the Llwyngwril Yarn Bombers, a group of keen knitters from the Meirionnydd village four miles south of Barmouth.
The mascot, which stands at four feet high, had been installed on a bridge in Llwyngwril to highlight the International Sheepdog Trials and Country Festival, which will be held in nearby Tywyn this coming September.
But members of the group are now appealing for any information on Gwril’s wereabouts after he was snatched.
Worried villagers are now considering scrapping their annual outdoor displays amid fears more of their items will be stolen.
According to Pat Griffiths of the Llwyngwril Yard Bombers, the knitted giant is believed to have been stolen at around 1am on Sunday morning.
She said: “As a group, we’re heartbroken. So much work went into creating Gwril the Giant, for someone to just take it away is so upsetting.
“Gwril has been securely placed on the bridge on Thursday, to advertise the Sheepdog Trials, but two days later it was gone.
“We know it was taken at around 1am on Sunday morning as someone was spotted running away with it in the direction of Fairbourne, and we have also found part of his banner in a garden in the village.
“But so far the police haven’t managed to catch whoever’s responsible.
“We’re now seriously considering what to do with this year’s display we are trying to promote our village as supporters of the International Sheep Dog Trials and yet now we are worried about putting out the displays in case someone else thinks it’s ok to go around stealing other people’s property.”
