A 36-year-old man was branded "controlling, arrogant and self-righteous" by a judge after he admitted attacking a young woman at her Abergele home.
John Clarke, of Blackrod, near Bolton, received an eight months suspended jail term after he pleaded guilty at Caernarfon Crown Court to assault causing actual bodily harm and criminal damage.
He must also carry out 180 hours unpaid work and pay a £100 surcharge.
Judge Geraint Walters told Clarke the incident was a "sustained and hugely unpleasant attack on a vulnerable woman."
He added: "You have come very close to serving a prison sentence.
"You are a controlling, arrogant and self-righteous individual who poses, and will continue to pose, a high risk of using violence against women.
"That will remain the case until you confront the issue."
Prosecutor James Coutts said Clarke had dragged the woman out of her bedroom by her hair and struck her face.
Her left cheek was swollen and she was bruised and scratched.
Russell Davies, defending, said Clarke was "in drink" at the time.
He had a "personality flaw" and recognised that he needed to address it the barrister added.
