A teenage boy has died following an incident near a school.
Police said the death of the 15-year-old boy occurred near Pembroke School on Monday.
A Dyfed-Powys Police spokeswoman said: “Pembrokeshire Police have commenced enquiries into the circumstances surrounding the tragic death of a 15-year-old male which occurred today near Pembroke School.
“Next of kin have been advised and are being supported by a Family Liaison Officer.
H.M Coroner has been advised.”
The spokeswoman said school community police officers are working with the school to ensure the wellbeing of the rest of the pupils.
An ambulance was called to the scene just before 11.50am and the teenager was taken to the accident and emergency department at Withybush Hospital in Haverfordwest.
A police car was seen parked at the school on Monday afternoon.
Earlier Pembrokeshire Council said the boy had been taken to hospital following a “serious incident near the school”.
In a statement, it said: "There was a serious incident involving a year 10 male pupil to the south of Pembroke School site this morning, which is currently being investigated by the Police."
The school remained open for the rest of the day.
Pembroke Town Councillor Pauline Waters said the community was devastated by the news and would be doing all it could to lend its support and comfort to the teenager’s family.
She said: “We are all deeply shocked by this news, in what is a very small and close-knit community. Pembroke is a small town and news of this will be felt by everyone. The death of someone so young is obviously just heartbreaking and our hearts go out to his family.”
Another town councillor David Boswell said he was shocked and saddened by the news.
“As a father and grandfather to hear the loss of such a young life is tragic. I can only offer my sincerest condolences to this boy’s family for their sad loss," he said.
Town Mayor Dennis Evans added: “Pembroke is a small close-knit community so it is very sad to learn about the death of any young person in such tragic circumstances, and especially as we have a grandson of the same age. On behalf of myself and fellow councillors, our thoughts and condolences are with the family, friends and staff at the school at this very difficult time.”
