AN NHS doctor who worked at a North Wales hospital has left his family in the UK to join ISIS.

Leaked IS recruitment papers seen by the BBC show Issam Abuanza, 37, who worked at Glan Clwyd Hospital at Bodelwyddan, has joined the Islamic State militant group in Syria.

Dr Abuanza worked at the hospital from May 2007 to July 2009 before moving around the country with work.

The Palestinian doctor has British citizenship and is believed to be the first practising NHS doctor known to have joined the Islamic State group.

His sister Najla has told the BBC his parents would never forgive him.

She said: “He used to be quite the dashing young man, very modern.

“I’ve no idea how he became like this or who showed him the path to terror
“They will never forgive him.

“My dad’s wish was to see him before he dies.

“He has spent all his money on him and his education and this is what he does.”

Dr Abuanza gained his medical licence in 2009.

He posted "God bless this act of terrorism" on his Facebook page on the day of the Charlie Hebdo attacks in Paris on January 7 last year.

According to the BBC, The Palestinian worked at Scarborough hospital between October 2012 and August 2013.

Security minister John Hayes said IS “targets vulnerable people”.

He added: “They also target children, but they target professionals too.

“They are trying to corrupt British people of all types, encouraging them to murder and maim their neighbours and to go and fight in Syria.”

Dr Abuanza later worked in Sheffield where he combined shifts as a registrar with running an online clothing company, which was dissolved three months before he arrived in Syria.

According to the BBC, Dr Abuanza’s current whereabouts are unknown, but in October 2015 he was living in Deir Ezzour province in eastern Syria.

A spokeswoman for Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board said: "I can confirm a doctor of that name did work at Glan Clwyd Hospital during those dates. There is nothing more we can say."
