A 28-YEAR-OLD man who was arrested for cannabis possession tried to run from the police, a court heard.
Liam Joseph Edwards, of Cefn Road, Wrexham, pleaded guilty at Wrexham Magistrates Court to possession of cannabis, a class B drug, and obstructing a police constable in the execution of their duty.
The court heard how a police officer had been on patrol in the Caia Park area on December 2 last year when he saw three young males travelling in a car, one of whom was the defendant.
Rhian Jackson, prosecuting, said the officer had made to follow the car and pull the driver over as he saw the occupants fidgeting and moving around and suspected they may have been in possession of drugs.
He pulled the car over on Hullah Lane and called his colleagues for assistance as he was on his own, while he spoke to the occupants in the meantime.
Ms Jackson said the officer had noticed a smell of cannabis and informed the driver, the defendant, and the passengers that they were being detained so that the car could be searched for drugs.
The court heard how the search was conducted and a small amount of cannabis, consistent with personal use, was found in the car along with a quantity of cash.
All three men were arrested and taken to Wrexham police station, however Ms Jackson said that when an officer tried to escort Edwards from the car, he had attempted to flee but was chased and apprehended by the officer.
Bethan Jones, defending, said Edwards accepted the majority of the crown’s case against him but said the officer had exaggerated the distance he had run before he was apprehended.
She added the other two men Edwards was with were being dealt with separately and added that her client did not have any previous convictions for drug related offences.
Magistrates’ chairman Andrew Stubbs issued Edwards with a 12-month conditional discharge and ordered him to pay £85 costs and a £15 surcharge. He also ordered a forfeiture and destruction order for the drugs that were seized.
