A man who runs a coffee shop in Llandudno is alleged to have raped a 26-year-old woman he met in a pub.
Jamil Kanawati, 33, of Llandudno Road, Penrhyn Bay, met the woman at a celebration in Llandudno on December 29 last year and then drove her to his home.
A jury at Caernarfon Crown Court heard the woman had little recollection of the events of that night, but she rejected defence claims she wanted sex in order to have a baby and claim state benefits.
Prosecutor Owen Edwards said the celebration had been attended by people from different parts of the world living and working in Llandudno.
The jury was told the woman and three others had drunk from four bottles of red wine in the pub.
She and others had accepted a lift home from Kanawati, but he took her to his house.
Opening the prosecution case, Mr Edwards alleged: “Once there, he decided he was having sex with her, come what may.”
The jury was shown a video interview with detectives in which the woman described Kanawati “blowing something from a can into my face” and then forcing himself on her.
She said there were coloured disco lights in the lounge of his home and that he kept telling her to relax, blowing smoke into her face.
She said: “I kept trying to push him away when he came close to me. That’s all I remember.”
Mr Edwards said Kanawati claimed the woman had been enthusiastic for sex.
“It was only afterwards that she became upset,” he said.
Mr Edwards said the victim remembered waking up alone and going into another bedroom, where she found Kanawati asleep.
Giving evidence, she told the jury she was confused and disorientated but accepted she had asked Kanawati to drive her home at about 6am.
Two hours later, she called police and told them she had been sexually assaulted.
The jury heard police had received an earlier call from the same mobile number at 1.16am.
In that earlier call, which was played to the jury, a female could be heard sobbing. Officers had tried to call back.
Cross examining, defence barrister Simon Killeen suggested to the woman she had a plan to seduce Kanawati because he was rich and she wanted to be pregnant by him.
“You became upset when the plan didn’t work,” he said.
She said: “No, that is not what happened. I do not want a baby. I have made plans for the future and they do not include having a child.”
The trial continues.
