POLICE have welcomed the jailing of a cocky burglar who boasted to detectives they would "never prove" he was guilty.
Dominic Roberts broke into the home of a pensioner living in Aberavon and stole cameras and a laptop as well as money boxes full of coins.
When officers were called to the burglary, a police tracker dog led them to Roberts and one of the cameras he had stolen. Swansea Crown Court heard that footwear marks found at the scene of the crime also matched a pair of trainers at this home.
However, in his police interview he boasted that detectives wouldn't be able to prove he had done anything wrong.
Twenty-one year-old Roberts, of Julian Terrace, Aberavon, pleaded guilty to the Nobel Avenue burglary when he appeared in the dock — and was sentenced to 18 months in prison.
South Wales Police detective inspector Dave Peart of Neath Port Talbot CID welcomed the sentence, saying the burglary had left the victim shaking with fear.
He said: "This burglary had a traumatic impact on the victim — but through the good work of officers who attended the scene and the follow-up investigation by CID officers, we were able to prove that Dominic Roberts was responsible and put him before the courts to be sentenced to prison."
Port Talbot inspector Tim Hopkins also welcomed the outcome of the case.
He said "a lot of work" had gone into investigating and preventing burglaries in the Sandfields, Baglan and Aberavon areas.
He added: "We once again remind residents of the importance of keeping windows and doors locked and secure which will significantly reduce the chances of becoming a victim of burglary."
