A 19-year-old who robbed an off-licence brandishing a wrench claimed he’d been using drugs since the age of six.
Former heroin addict Darren Pomeroy, from Conwy but of no fixed address, admitted stealing cash, vodka and tobacco during the raid at the premises at 169 Conwy road inLlandudno Junction in March.
He was jailed for 28 months at Caernarfon Crown Court yesterday.
The court heard that during the incident, Pomeroy had been waving the wrench and was “under the influence of some substance.”
David Mainstone, prosecuting, said that Pomeroy held the wrench above his head and shouted at the owner to “open the till and take all the money out.”
He stole £100 from the till and also demanded vodka and tobacco.
The shop keeper said his heart “nearly stopped because he was shaking so much” during the terrifying raid.
Pomeroy and a girl of 15, who cannot be named for legal reasons, then went to a woman’s home where the girl had boasted about what occurred.
But the woman was a regular customer at the off-licence and reported the incident to the police.
During the hearing, Judge Geraint Walters told the teen: ”You must understand, despite the fact you are still only 19, you carried out a terrifying robbery on the owner of an off-licence in Llandudno Junction.
'Life of crime and imprisonment'
“He’s a hard-working individual who in a real sense serves the community in that area, working long hours.”
A pre-sentence report suggested he had used drugs from the age of six and had taken heroin for some time.
Judge Walters said to the defendant: ”It’s obvious your upbringing wasn’t as fulfilling as the experience of most young men.
“Everybody knows those who use heroin and become addicted, as inevitably they will stop at nothing to get their hands on money,
He warned Pomeroy that if he went back to heroin on his release, he had a ‘life of crime and imprisonment’ ahead of him.
Defence counsel Simon Rogers said Pomeroy had a “significant” drug habit at the time of the incident and the robbery was committed to obtain cash for heroin.
No injury was caused.
Pomeroy had found his time remanded in custody extremely difficult after fellow inmates jumped to “wholly untrue” assumptions because he had been arrested with a girl.
“He tells me he’s now drug-free,” the barrister added.
