Threats to kill, abusive and racist behaviour and assaults have resulted in police being called to North Wales hospitals 233 times during the past two years.
Police responded to numerous violent offences since March 2014, including assaults occasioning actual bodily harm, at Wrexham Maelor, Ysbyty Gwynedd and Ysbyty Glan Clwyd.
The details were revealed through a Freedom of Information request by the Daily Post toNorth Wales Police, however a spokesman for Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board said staff contacted the police for numerous reasons, and had “no record” of the incidents occurring on their premises.
He added: “We believe these will be incidents that have occurred elsewhere, but were reported to police by a member of staff involved with caring for the injured party.”
However Donna Hutton, regional organiser at Unison who represents staff at the health board said not all incidents of violence towards staff were reported and the figures were probably even higher.
She said: “Members face assaults from some of the public when all they are trying to do is help them.
“It is not acceptable that a person goes to work and comes home injured.
“Threats to kill are scary and menacing and just as damaging as physical assaults. No one should be in fear whilst at work.
“There are good policies in place and we expect Betsi to safeguard the staff - zero tolerance means just that.”
Since March 2014 police have been called to reports of:
Two threats to kill - one in Gwynedd in 2015/16 and one in Wrexham in 2014/15, one arrest in each case but no one was charged
Two reports of possession of a knife in Gwynedd – one person arrested and charged
Three racial incidents
Six bikes being stolen – five at Wrexham Maelor and one at Glan Clwyd
One sexual assault on a male (Wrexham) - no one arrested or charged
One rape of a woman (Wrexham) - no one arrested or charged
Two sexual assaults on a female (Wrexham) - no one arrested or charged
Five assaults of a police officer and 18 incidents of threatening or abusive behaviour
32 incidents of assault occasioning actual bodily harm - eight people charged
One robbery of personal property (Wrexham) - no one arrested or charged
North Wales Police confirmed that while officers were called to the incidents, it does not necessarily mean they took place on hospital grounds, as the allegations may have been reported there by staff, relatives or patients.
