Fire crews were called to the blaze at St David's Junior and Infants School in Cwmbran on Saturday evening
South Wales Fire and Rescue Service were called to the blaze at St David’s Junior and Infants School, Caldicot Way, at around 8.09pm on Saturday with crews from Cwmbran , New Inn and Malpas being sent to the incident.
Crews reported the fire was at the rear of the school in Pontrhydyrun but confirmed it had been contained to a classroom, which suffered minor damage.
The fire was extinguished after more than 40 minutes and a fire investigation was carried out.
A spokeswoman for the fire service said the fire was started in an outdoor storage container.
She added the cause of the fire was determined as deliberate and there would be extra security at the school until it reopens after the Bank Holiday on Tuesday.
She said the local authority’s emergency planning department and staff at the school would be working to ensure there was minimum disruption to pupils.
