BURGLARS smashed their way into a bike shop and sparked an hour-long police chase which went as far as Merseyside.
Three police forces were involved in the major pursuit following a break-in in the early hours of yesterday at Life On Wheels on Halkyn Road, Holywell, where bikes worth about £25,000 were stolen.
North Wales Police, the first force to be involved following reports of the break-in at 12.20am, sent out a helicopter.
A vehicle believed to be connected to the burglary was spotted by officers in the Deeside area – sparking a police chase which involved North Wales Police, Merseyside Police and Cheshire Constabulary.
Two men – a 21-year-old and a 27-year-old – were finally arrested by Cheshire Police on the A562 as they headed towards the Runcorn Bridge at about 1.45am.
Bike shop owner Will Rowlands said the offenders tried to smash their way through the front window using a pick axe and then through the front door.
“They took more than a dozen bikes with a combined value of over £25,000,” he said.
He praised police for their quick response time and said he believed all the stolen bikes had been recovered.
He said it was the first time the bike shop has been broken into in its 23 years but the third time one of his businesses had been targeted.
Cheshire Police tweeted yesterday: “A pursuit through three force areas resulted in two arrests overnight for burglary, stopped on the A562.”
North Wales Police said the two men were arrested in Cheshire.
They said the vehicle suspected to be involved in the incident was seen in the Deeside area and it made its way into the Merseyside Police and Cheshire Police areas where it was stopped by officers.
