two burglars who used a shovel from the garage of a house to force open its patio doors ran away with the car keys when they were disturbed.
Police officers believe the burglars thought the house, on Whitefield Road in the Llandaff North area of Cardiff , was empty when they entered at around 6pm on Sunday.
An investigation is being carried out.
One suspect is described as white, around 5ft 6ins to 5ft 8ins tall and was wearing a bright red coat.
The second suspect is described as white, around the same height but of slimmer build, and was wearing a blue or grey hooded top and jeans which were hanging low.
Detective Sergeant Andrew Miles from South Wales Police said: “Being a victim of burglary is a traumatic experience and investigating such incidents is a priority for South Wales Police.
“We believe the two burglars mistakenly thought the house was empty when they broke in and, when they were disturbed, ran off with the car keys.
“The car was not stolen.
“An investigation is continuing into this burglary and would appeal for anyone with information to contact us.”
There are additional patrols in place in Whitchurch and Llandaff North and police wish to remind residents to ensure doors and windows are locked and review the security of their outbuildings.
