TREES could be removed to stop yobs targeting a children’s play.
Paul Rogers, Wrexham Council member for Brymbo, has asked the authority’s officers to consider removing trees closest to the Railway Road playground in order to open up the area, which he says has been a focus of anti-social behaviour.
Brymbo Community Council, which now pays for the maintenance of play areas in the village, is likely to have to cover the cost of vandalism at the site.
Cllr Rogers said there were concerns about community safety as the play area has become very enclosed by the surrounding trees.
He said: “It is very unfortunate that there has been a recent spate of anti-social behaviour in the community, which has resulted in some vandalism.
“The play area at Railway Road has suffered some vandalism and it looks in a very poor state after paint was thrown all over it, which is proving difficult to remove.
“It is likely that the community council will have to pick up the cost for this.
“It is disappointing because in the main we understand the youths who have caused the issues are from outside of the village.
“I am keen to ensure that Brymbo children are not punished as a result of this and will continue to work to improve facilities for the youth of the village.
“We are looking at whether there are any additional community activities we can provide for them within the resources we have available.”
“In the short term I have asked council officers to look at options for removing some trees closest to the play area to open up the site to remove some of the issues we have had in recent weeks.
“The trees provide cover for people hanging around there and there has been a bit of under-age drinking going on.
“It’s quite unnerving for people walking their dog in the evening or for anyone who is out on their own.”
Cllr Rogers added that a new PCSO had started work in the village and was keen to tackle the issue.
Robina Ahmed had previously been based in Wrexham town centre and Overton.
Earlier this month, Cllr Rogers said a number of residents had reported gangs of youths causing vandalism to property across the village.
Brymbo Community Council urged people to report incidents to the police to crack down on the issue.
A North Wales Police spokesman said that anyone wishing to report incidents should call them on 101.
