Anthony Hurley, 54, of no fixed abode, was jailed today over a cannabis factory and fleeing the country to Tenerife

Anthony Hurley, 54, was charged over the illegal drugs den and went on the run to Tenerife

A man who rented a house in Rhyl where a cannabis factory was set up fled abroad after he was charged.
But when Anthony Hurley returned to Britain from Tenerife in December he was arrested.
This afternoon at Mold Crown Court , Hurley was jailed for 14 months after he admitted producing cannabis, possessing cannabis with intent to supply and failing to answer bail.
Hurley, 54, of no fixed abode, had no previous convictions.
He received 12 months for the drugs offences and an additional eight weeks to be served consecutively for going on the run.
Judge Niclas Parry said Hurley was a mature man of good character who had got involved in “something quite murky.”
He said: “You became embroiled in a significant operation where substantial commercial gain was anticipated.”

Yield was estimated at £10,000 - £30,000

Owen Edwards, prosecuting, said in August 2014 police were called to a report of men damaging an Audi car in Crescent Road, Rhyl.
Police believed an attempt was being made to rob the cannabis factory they found nearby.
Efforts had been made to dismantle the factory before the arrival of the police.
There were a total of 42 plants and the potential yield was estimated at between £10,000 and £30,000.
Another man Nigel Williams was arrested at the time and he was dealt with at CaernarfonCrown Court.
But Hurley absconded and fled abroad.
The court heard Hurley had become tenant of the house with the intention of turning it into a cannabis factory.
It was regarded as a professional set up – a significant construction for commercial gain, the court was told.
Simon Killeen, defending, said his client accepted he was going to jail.

Determined

After the court case Det Sgt David Buckley said: “Hurley thought he could escape justice by leaving the country, but his conviction shows that North Wales Police are determined to bring criminals to justice no matter where they try to hide.”
(*) Nigel Williams, 26, of Sheldon Road, Wolverhampton, admitted producing and possessing cannabis with intent to supply after police searched the house in Coast Road, Rhyl.
He was jailed for 20 months at Caernarfon Crown Court last April.
