A COUNTY councillor and former mayor has been charged with a historic sex offence.
Cllr David Simmons, aged 68, of Highlands Road in Rhuddlan, made his first court appearance on December 31 at Flintshire magistrates’ court at Mold.
Simmons is charged with raping a female in 1978.
Magistrates sent the case to Mold Crown Court on January 8 when he will appear at a preliminary hearing.
He was bailed on condition that he does not contact the complainant.
Simmons is a Labour councillor on Denbighshire County Council and represents the Rhyl East ward and served as mayor of Rhyl in 2014/15.
A second man has been charged with indecently assaulting the same woman back in 1978.
Ronald Edward Jones, aged 64, of Trem yr Afon, Kinmel Bay, was also bailed pending a preliminary hearing at the crown court on the same date.
