A SYRIAN-BORN man who runs a coffee shop in Llandudno’s main street has been remanded in custody accused of the rape of a young woman who had been at a birthday celebration in a pub.
The case against Jamil Kanawati, who told magistrates at a special court in the town on New Year’s Day that it was his 33rd birthday, was sent to Caernarfon crown court where he will appear on January 11.
He is accused of raping the local woman at his flat in Llandudno Road, Penrhyn Bay, on December 30.
His solicitor Robert Vickery told the court : “He recognises and understands the allegation he faces is serious, but he will maintain his innocence.”
In a plea for conditional bail Mr Vickery said Kanawati had come to this country from Dubai eight years ago.
If granted bail he would surrender his British passport. He also held a Syrian passport but this had expired.
Robert Blakemore, prosecuting, opposed bail. Kanawati was remanded in custody
