Llandudno,North Wales - Pregnant ewe put down after dog attack in Deganwy

A PREGNANT ewe had to be put to sleep after being attacked by dogs in Deganwy.

The incident, in which the ewe was attacked by three dogs on land known as the ‘Vardre', is believed to have happened at around 4:15pm on Tuesday, December 1.

Shortly before 9:30am yesterday morning (Wednesday, December 2) police were made aware of the incident by the farmer after the ewe had to be put to sleep.

It is believed a man was walking his dogs off the lead when one of the dogs, described as large with a white tail and brindle coloured coat attacked the ewe.

Another dog is believed to have been wearing a yellow coat and the third was wearing a black coat.

 PC Dave Allen, of the rural crime team, said: “The ewe suffered extensive injuries to her rear leg which resulted in the tendons being exposed. Following advice from a vet sadly the ewe had to be put to sleep.

“A witness has come forward with a description of the dogs but unfortunately we don’t know the breed of the dogs. We believe the owner was some distance away when the incident occurred and was calling the dogs away from the ewe before continuing with their walk.

“The Vardre area is a popular area for dog walkers and I am appealing to anybody who may be familiar with the area and who may know the identity of the dog owner to come forward.

“Yet again the farming community and the rural crime team are picking up the pieces from irresponsible dog ownership. Unfortunately our team have seen many times, the horrific injuries and pain a dog attack can cause to livestock. I would urge anybody with information to come forward and I would ask that if you walk your dog near livestock, put it on a lead.”
