Holywell,North Wales - A man who attacked police and abused hospital staff after drinking 24 cans of lager

Police welcome jail sentence for drugged-up 21-year-old who lashed out and spat at officers during three-hour A&E outburst

A man who attacked police and abused hospital staff after drinking 24 cans of lager and taking a cocktail of drugs was jailed today.
Connor Buckley, 21, from Penymaes, Holywell , was arrested by police in Denbigh when he displayed “considerable violence”.
Concerned for his welfare, they took him to Glan Clwyd Hospital at Bodelwyddan but he was so aggressive towards staff that he was taken out and put in a waiting ambulance.
There followed a three-hour incident when he was aggressive, lashing out and spitting at police officers, who placed him in leg restraints at one stage.
Buckley was charged and bailed but then caused a disturbance at a pub.
Prosecutor Rhian Jackson said police were called to The Britannia at Halkyn on Monday this week where he was abusive to staff and customers.
At one stage he was lying motionless alongside the police car – and as officers looked for a pulse he clenched his fist as if he wanted to fight them.
He was taken back to hospital but again was abusive and aggressive towards staff.

At Flintshire Magistrates’ Court at Mold, he admitted assaulting two police officers, resisting police, being drunk and disorderly and breaching a criminal behaviour order on January 27 - and a breach of the criminal behaviour order again on Monday.
He was jailed for a total of 36 weeks.
Buckley did not remember the incidents and when he had calmed down was polite – a change man – the court heard.
District Judge Gwyn Jones said that it was clear that a mixture of 24 cans of lager with a cocktail of unlawful substances had a significant influence upon him in Denbigh.
He ignored initial advice from the police and when he later came to their attention he “showed a significant degree of aggression and violence” towards officers.
But when the effect of drink and drugs had worn off he was contrite and dealt with officers and staff with a degree of respect.
The judge said he continued to take various drugs and alcohol and then his behaviour impacted on many other people’s lives.
It was “a persistent and flagrant breach” of a court order within three weeks of his release from custody, he said.
Steven Alis, defending, said his client had been homeless but his uncle had been assisting him and keeping him on a tight leash.
Buckley had been off drugs and off drink and it was believed that he was “starting to turn the corner”.
After the case, Inspector Gareth Jones, at Denbigh Police Station where the officers assaulted were based, said “Those in our communities who assault police officers in the execution of their duty must realise there is a consequence to their actions.
"Police officers serve to protect the community in what are very often trying and demanding situations and so I’m reassured that Connor Buckley is now behind bars”
