Trains on the route regularly travel at more than 100mph and police said the driver could have died
Police are on the hunt for a group of young youths who have been throwing rocks at trains - missing one driver by just inches.
Last weekend, two trains has their windshields damaged or broken after stones were thrown from the Trowbridge Road Bridge in Cardiff.
One stone smashed through the windscreen of Great Western’s Taunton to Cardiff service and landed in the cab just next to the driver.
Trains on the route regularly travel at more than 100mph and police have warned that if the rock had hit him then it would have been fatal.
The incidents happened at lunchtime on Saturday, February 4.
Three train drivers passing under the bridge reported seeing a group throwing stones at their trains from the bridge.
Two of the trains, a freight locomotive and the Great Western Railway service, sustained damage to their windshields.
After drivers had raised the alarm, British Transport Police conducted a thorough search of the area but the criminals had fled.
Investigating officer PC Matt Dando said: “This was an extraordinarily dangerous and reckless thing to do which could have had fatal consequences.
“Trains along this line travel at speeds close to 100mph and a stone striking the cab can easily break the windshield and hit the driver. It is impossible to understand why someone would be so stupid and take such a risk.
“Fortunately, both drivers were unharmed however, as you can imagine, it has left them feeling incredibly shaken.
“If you were in the area at the time and saw a person or group acting suspiciously then please get in touch – your information could be vital to our investigation.”
