North Wales chief constable Mark Polin responds to concerns about lack of police presence by saying officers increasingly challenged with other duties such as dealing with child sex exploitation investigations

Chief constable Mark Polin was at a meeting of the Police and Crime Panel when he was challenged by Wrexham Cllr David Griffiths.
And the problem of arsons in Caia Park was raised by Cllr Bernie McCann, who said that despite money being poured into trying to deal with the problem it was no better.
Cllr Griffiths told him: “We don’t see the police , although the figures may say they’re there. We don’t see them walking around the streets. We see them in their car, going through.”
Mr Polin told him that despite there being extra police support officers they were being asked increasingly to take part in other duties such as looking out for child sexual exploitation and taking part in house to house inquiries.
The chief constable was also told that people in Denbighshire - and Rhyl in particular - were afraid to go out at night.
“It’s the arson capital of Wales, where are we going with it?” he asked at the Conwy meeting last night.
Mr Polin responded that resources had been increased but the problem would decrease for a while then break out again.
“Sometimes we lack intelligence (from the community) about it,” he said.
There had been “a reluctance on the part of the community to tell us about this,” he added.
Cllr Brian Blakeley said of the Rhyl situation: “We are worried in Denbighshire regarding policing and what’s happening.”

Do you believe there are enough bobbies on the beat in North Wales?

Mr Polin promised to look into his comments but believed there was a “disconnect” because he was not having such claims reported to him.
He added there was great effort was being put into dealing with serious sexual offences, yet the number of offences reported to the police continued to rise.
“But I would rather see offences reported to us than not,” he said.
