A "HIGHLY INTELLIGENT" Swansea University engineering student ruined his life by downloading child pornography of the worst kind, a court heard.
Hong Kong-born Ka Garfield Wu should have been looking forward to graduating this academic year. Instead, Wu, aged 23, is starting a 12 month prison sentence after he admitted possessing pornographic films, including one featuring a baby and another of a young girl with a dog.
Jim Davis, prosecuting, told Swansea Crown Court how police received information about Wu and on April 30 raided his flat at Chelhydra Walk in the Maritime Quarter.
Wu immediately told them they would "find something" on his laptop. Computer experts found so many indecent images of children they stopped counting at 2,328, said Mr Davis.
Almost 200 of the images and films fell into the most serious category A.
"It was child pornography of the worst kind," he added.
During police interviews Wu said he had been under stress.

Wu's parents flew from Hong Kong for the hearing. His barrister, Robin Rouch, said he had destroyed his life.
He had already been suspended by the University pending the court hearing and "in all probability" would not be permitted to complete the course and graduate.
Judge Paul Thomas told Wu he was a highly intelligent man but the sheer volume of the indecent images and the age of some of the children made his offending "very, very serious."
"This is not a victimless crime. Those images show real children, including babies and tiny children between the ages of two and four, suffering unspeakable sexual abuse.
"They may well suffer physically and psychologically for the rest of their lives.
"The reason that happens is because there is a market for it. They would not be treated as cruelly if people like you did not provide a market," he added.
Judge Thomas said it was unclear whether Wu would be deported to Hong Kong. But, if he was, he should seek specialist help for his perverted attitude towards children.
Wu was also ordered to register with the police as a sex offender.
