VOLUNTEERS of a much- loved Llanelli park have warned "look after it, or it will be gone" after £8,000 worth of damage was caused to the AstroTurf and safety matting.
Penyfan Park was targeted by vandals who lit a fire on the turf — to the anger of the ten hard working individuals who devote a combined 30 hours a week to maintain it for the local community.
There has also been £1,000 damage caused to the rubber mats — after three incidents of vandalism in the last six weeks.
David Skivington, secretary of the Penyfan and Llwynwhilwg Tenants and Residents Association (PLTRA) said: "There are one or two mindless people spoiling it for everyone.
"The council have said they are not going to do the repairs, and we as a community group will not be able to afford to do it.

"What we are asking is, if you know anyone who is responsible for causing this damage, either contact the police or come and have a quiet word with us in the cabin, and we will not say who told us."
PLTRA volunteers each work on average three hours a week to put on events and other activities for the good of the community.
They are now considering other measures which may help reduce crime.
"We have asked the council to see if they can put CCTV up, but for legal reasons we can't," Mr Skivington said.
"I want to make it clear to people that in the park, it is for kids aged 11 or under.
"The AstroTurf is available to everyone 365 days a year no matter what your age, and people need to look after it or it will be gone, as we cannot afford to get it repaired.

A police spokeswoman said: "Police received a report of criminal damage to the AstroTurf at Penyfan playing fields on October 27, 2016.
"Sections of the AstroTurf have been burned, leaving damage estimated to cost £8,000 to repair.
"If anyone has any information they are asked to contact Llanelli Police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111."
