A woman in her 20s awoke in a bed and found a tipsy 32-year-old man sexually assaulting her, a judge heard yesterday (Wednesday, November 2).
William Hunter, of Grove Road, Colwyn Bay, received a three-year community order with a sexual offending treatment programme and must register as a sex offender for five years.
Judge Huw Rees told him at Caernarfon crown court :”I want to make it very clear to you it’s because you haven’t been in trouble before, because you pleaded guilty and some creative work can be done to prevent you from offending again.”
He said to Hunter :”This on any view was a gross violation of this lady’s physical and sexual integrity.” A pre-sentence report showed Hunter had a level of immaturity and issues that should be addressed. “I am just about prepared to take an exceptional course,” Judge Rees added.
Prosecutor Matthew Curtis said the sexual assault happened in March and the victim sobbed afterwards.
Hunter was told to leave the property. He was picked up by a police traffic patrol as he walked along the A55 and taken home for his own safety. But Mr Curtis said the woman rang police around the same time.
The defendant was drunk and had fresh superficial cuts to his neck and wrists when arrested. Scientific tests linked him to the offence.
Defence counsel Brett Williamson said :”He realises this is a terrible thing for him to have done and this lady must have been terribly frightened.” Hunter had been disinhibited by drink.
