Pwllheli,North Wales - Girl, 9, treated over HIV fears after falling on used needle while out playing

A young girl is having to have tests and treatment after falling onto a used needle near Winllan Lloyd in Pwllheli

The youngster was playing near the Winllan Lloyd footpath which runs between the town's primary and secondary schools when she fell on what is believed to be a drug addict's used syringe

A nine year old girl is undergoing HIV tests after fears that she fell on a used needle whilst out playing.
The youngster was out with friends when she fell near the Winllan Lloyd footpath inPwllheli , which runs between the town’s primary school and secondary school.
Both her and her friend claim they saw needles in the area and she was taken to the A&E at Ysbyty Gwynedd in Bangor immediately after the incident and will now receive treatment for up to 6 months as a precaution.
The child’s mother has contacted the local schools to warn them of the dangers in the area, and is urging other parents to be vigilant when letting their children out to play.
The 27 year old mother of three said: “We can’t be 100% sure but it’s better to be safe than sorry.
“I have been to both schools to inform them and phoned the council as well as the police, they have all being amazing.
“The staff at A&E were brilliant with her and the doctor was lovely.
“Kids should be allowed to play where they want, kids will be kids, but we need to tell them to be careful.”
The nine year old will now receive three lots of injections for HIV and two more blood tests, which will take 3 to 6 months.
She also had oral medication for five days to prevent any skin infections.
The incident has sparked major concern amongst local residents who are “appalled” and “disgusted” that used needles have been discarded carelessly in a popular walking area.
Pwllheli Town Councillor Jonathan Roberts said: “This is terrible news, I really hope she’s going to be OK and the thoughts of all of us on the Town Council are with her.
“I have campaigned for months now about the problem of drinking and drugs around the town.
“Winllan Lloyd has been a hot spot for some time, with drug paraphernalia being found there last year while the place was being tidied up.
“We need the police to be more vigilant and increase patrols around the town to drive these druggies off the streets, and once again if members of the public see or suspect anything untoward taking place, for goodness sake contact the authorities on 101.”
This incident happened just three days after it was reported that a youngster was taken to hospital after falling off a swing and landing on what was feared to be a heroin addict’s used needle in Llangefni.
Gwynedd council are now urging residents to report any discarded needles.
A spokesperson for Gwynedd council said: “As soon as the Council is made aware of hypodermic needles on public land, our staff attend the scene immediately to deal with the discarded materials.
“We would urge any member of the public who comes across a discarded hypodermic needle not touch it under any circumstances, and to inform Gwynedd council immediately on 01766 771000 so that they can arrange safe removal.”
