Police have confirmed that a murder investigation has been launched in in Ystrad Mynach after the death of a 75-year-old woman.
Detectives have appealed to train passengers who may have used a local train station to get in touch
Gwent Police said they responded to a call for assistance from the ambulance service to an address in Nelson Road, near Ystrad Mynach Train Station, at 5.45pm yesterday.
On arrival the body of the elderly woman was discovered. Her death is being treated as suspicious.
A 47-year-old local man was arrested at the scene on suspicion of murder and is currently receiving hospital treatment for minor injuries.
The family of the deceased are being supported by specialist officers.
Two community and county councillors who represent the area spoke of a sense of shock following the incident.
Councillor Martyn James said: “I’ve been out and spoken to several people this morning. They are very shocked because naturally we’re a small community and these incidents happen on very, very rare occasions.
"They’re very sad when they do happen – so naturally there would be an element of shock.”
The 62-year-old, who has lived in the are for 37 years, added: “It’s very tragic for all the family concerned.”
Coun Alan Angel, 65, said: “The atmosphere at the moment is shock. These kind of things happening within our community are few and far between. Obviously for myself and Councillor James our thoughts are with the family.”
Detectives are appealing to anyone who might have used the train station at any time yesterday to get in touch as they might have information that could help with their inquiries.
