Wires strung deliberately at neck height across a busy cycle path could cause a serious injury, police have warned.
Maesteg Sergeant Jonathan Ridd said “it’s clear that somebody is out to cause hurt or to scare people” following the discovery of the wires across the Brynmenyn cycle path, Brynmenyn, near Bridgend .
Police received three calls in two days in April about the wires and have launched an investigation.
Police patrols increased
Officers said the wires are tied from tree to tree at neck height and they believe it’s only a matter of time before somebody is hurt.
Sergeant Ridd said: “We are taking this very seriously and would like to warn whoever is responsible that they are committing a serious offence which could cause very serious harm to somebody.
“We have increased patrols in the area and are considering other measures that will help us identify who is responsible.
'People must remain vigilant'
“For now, it is important that people who legitimately use the area such as walkers, joggers and cyclists, are aware of this issue and remain vigilant.”
Officers added that they suspect that it could be the work of young people who fail to appreciate the seriousness of their actions, so they have visited local schools to speak to children from the area.
• Anybody who has information about who is responsible or who notices anything suspicious, is urged to contact the Maesteg Neighbourhood policing team via 101, or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
