Dyfed-Powys Police are investigating the 'unexplained' death of a man in Brecon town centre.
The Ministry of Defence has confirmed the man was a soldier but are not providing any further comment at this time.
A spokeswoman for the police said officers received reports of an unconscious and injured man on Lion Street at around 1am on Sunday morning.
The man was conveyed to hospital by ambulance but later died.
The death is being treated as unexplained at this time and a police investigation is on-going.
An Army spokesperson said: "We are aware of an incident involving the death of a soldier in Brecon. Dyfed-Powys Police are investigating and it would be inappropriate to comment further at this time."
The scene in Brecon has been preserved as part of the investigation.
Members of the public reported a heavy police presence in the area throughout the morning and forensic tents have apparently also been set up.
Police in Brecon are appealing for anyone who was in the vicinity of Lion Street, Bethel Square, Tredegar Street and High Street between 12.30am and 01.30am or has any information that could assist with the inquiry to call police on 101 immediately quoting reference number DP-20160508-024.
