Bangor,North Wales - Sex offender re-jailed after phone with 'dark web' app found under his pillow

A SEX offender has been sent back to prison after a mobile phone with an app allowing anonymous access to the "dark web"was found under his pillow at a Bangor probation hostel, a judge heard. 

Jay Bolton, 29, of no fixed address, was jailed last June for seven months for possessing child porn, Caernarfon crown court was told. 

Then, in September, explained prosecutor Elen Owen, he was locked up for 24 weeks for failing to tell police of his address and accessing the internet on a library computer - in breach of a court order. 

The barrister said before Christmas he was released to live at the Ty Newydd hostel where the phone was discovered.

Bolton had been recalled to jail. 

However, after being freed again in March, he failed to register his whereabouts with police and was re-arrested. 

Counsel said when further evidence was put to him, Bolton had claimed he had access to the “dark web” to avoid being “hacked.” 

Defence barrister Matthew Curtis said Bolton, who had a difficult childhood, had been homeless.

He had also lost his family and a career in hospitality. 

Jailing him for ten months, Judge Philip Harris-Jenkins said Bolton had admitted breaching a sexual harm prevention order and failed to register his address as a sex offender. 

“These are the second set of breaches you have made in the last twelve months or so,” the judge remarked. 

“These are significant and serious breaches.” 

Judge Harris-Jenkins added: ”Although there’s no evidence you have accessed the type of images you were initially sentenced for, this was a flagrant disregard for court orders. 

“These orders are not optional. 

“I have to take a dim view in light of the previous breaches.”
