Swansea Crown Court heard that when staff refused to hand over cash, Anthony Davies quietly walked away.
Davies had spent around 40 minutes in the Port Talbot McDonald's in the early hours of January 4 "trying to pluck up the courage" to commit the robbery before asking staff to open the till — and being rebuffed.

The court heard the incident left staff feeling shocked and frightened.
Davies, of Borough Street, Port Talbot, pleaded guilty to attempted robbery and possessing an offensive weapon when he appeared in the dock.
The court heard Davies has 17 previous convictions for 34 offences — including for dishonesty, possession and trafficking of drugs and possessing an offensive weapon, namely a fishing knife — but had been out of trouble since 2012.
Ian Ibrahim, for Davies, said his client had been taking Valium for a number of months before the incident to help him cope with the illness of a family member but on the night in question took "an excessive amount" of the drug and could not remember much of what followed.
He added that the defendant wanted to apologise to the McDonald's staff involved.
Judge Keith Thomas jailed Davies for 40 months for the attempted robbery and two years for possessing an offensive weapon, the sentences to run concurrently.
