A man who mistook a teenage girl for a prostitute in Cardiff has been convicted of kerb crawling.
Amrulallah Dargai appeared at Cardiff Magistrates’ Court where he was found guilty of soliciting after he approached a 16-year-old girl who was cycling home along Sanquhar Street in Splott .
It was around 11.30pm on Sunday, August 17, when he asked the girl if she was doing “business”.
The girl made a note of the man’s car registration number and he was later traced by officers to a house in Fairwater .
Fined £100
When interviewed Dargai told officers he was concerned about her being out alone so late at night and denied approaching her for the purpose of sex.
The 44-year-old, from Fairwater, was summonsed to court to face a charge of soliciting another person for the purpose of obtaining their sexual services as a prostitute.
Following a trial at Cardiff Magistrates’ Court he was found guilty and fined £100.
He must also pay £300 costs to the Crown Prosecution Service and £20 to the victim.
Victim 'shocked and offended'
Officer in the case PC Katherine Barry said: “The victim was shocked and offended when she was approached by this individual.
“Despite being upset by what had happened, she did exactly the right thing – making a note of his car details, returning to her family home, and reporting the matter to South Wales Police .
“Street prostitution is a PACT priority for residents in Splott and it is important that we have long-term strategies to address the issues. We hope this case will act as a deterrent to anyone thinking of kerb crawling in Cardiff.”
