A MORRISTON Hospital patient smashed the back window of a nurse's car with a brick because he wanted to get inside the vehicle to keep warm, a court has heard.
Peter John Troy had been at the hospital on the afternoon of April 14 receiving treatment for injuries sustained in an assault.
But Swansea Magistrates Court heard that after being discharged he damaged a Mini which was parked near the hospital's helicopter landing pad, smashing his way inside with a brick.
The damage was discovered later that evening, and police alerted — blood swabs taken from inside the vehicle subsequently led to the defendant being identified and arrested.
Troy, aged 36, of Townhill Road, Mayhill, Swansea, pleaded guilty to criminal damage when he appeared before a district judge sitting at the magistrates court.
Troy has previous convictions for some 51 offences, and is currently subject to a community order which had been imposed just weeks after the hospital incident for unrelated matters.
The court heard that in his police interview he said he had been under the influence of Valium and alcohol at the time of the offence, and that feeling cold he had smashed the window of the car in order to seek shelter inside.
District judge Neale Thomas said he would let the current community order run, and imposed another order — to run for 10 weeks — with a 9pm to 6am nightly curfew. He also ordered Troy to pay the owner of the car £500.
The district judge told the defendant that there was "little or no doubt" that if he broke the curfew or committed fresh offences he would be sent to jail.
