Police hunt armed man who fled empty handed from Harry's Newsagent in Chester Avenue
The owner of a newsagents has urged would-be thieves to "think twice" about targeting his shop after a brave member of staff refused to give in to the demands of a knife-wielding thug.
Bradley Heyes was threatened by the armed man, who ordered him to hand over cash.
But the 24-year-old put up a fight and hit the panic button to alert the police, and the man left empty-handed at around 7.45pm on Wednesday.
The dramatic incident at Harry's Newsagent in Chester Street Kinmel Bay was caught on CCTV and a manhunt has now been launched by police.
'I struck him a till sign'
Speaking about his ordeal, father-of-two Bradley said: “I was stocking up the cigarettes behind the counter when I heard a bang. I stood up and there was a masked man with a knife and a bag in his hand demanding money.
“I told him to go away and he began to get more aggressive and was waving the knife around.
“I struck him with a till sign and told him I wasn’t giving him anything and he left.
“I did what I had to do, my wages come out of that money, I’m not about to give him something that I have to work hard for.”
'I'm not going to be bullied'
Bradley, who works full-time at the store added: “It was a shock to the system when I thought about it later but I’m not going to be bullied and it won’t stop me doing my job.”
Shop owner Haroon Fiaz said it sends out a message that they are not going to give into demands easily.
“We want people to know that we are not going to open our till to anyone who wants money,” he said. “They should think twice before coming in here to take from us.
“This is the second time in a year that something like this has happened and the third incident since we took on the shop in 2012. It’s not fair on anyone.”
'Bradley was very brave'
Mr Fiaz, who is offering a reward for information leading to a successful conviction, added: “People can’t make a habit of this, it’s shocking and traumatic.
“Bradley was very brave – we are so proud of him.”
DCI Jason Devonport, from St Asaph CID, said: “We are seeking anyone in the area of Chester Avenue around Harry’s Newsagents between 7pm and 8pm to make contact with the police.
“We know the offender who entered the store was wearing a grey hooded top – we are keen to know if the offender was seen before or after the offence and if he was with anyone else.”
