A BRICKLAYER accused of trying to gouge another man’s eye and punching him has been jailed for 18 months.

Judge Merfyn Hughes QC told Gareth Walsh, aged 31, of Stephen Road, Prestatyn, to pay £500 compensation after he was convicted of assault causing actual bodily harm on Paul Shepherd in Prestatyn.

Defence barrister Simon Killeen told Caernarfon Crown Court testimonials spoke of a hardworking man running his own business. He urged the judge to draw back from immediate custody.

But the judge said Walsh had been drinking at a nightclub and what happened after he left was without justification.

“This is a sustained assault,” the judge added.
