The 15-year-old from Flint was found dead in 1976 after disappearing from her home
The man accused of the rape and murder of Flint schoolgirl, Janet Commins is due to stand trial today.
Stephen Anthony Hough of Maes y Dre, Flint will appear before Mold Crown Court over the death of the 15-year-old in 1976, when he himself was a teenager.
He is charged with the murder and rape of Janet between January 7 and January 11, 1976.
Another man, Noel Jones, was jailed for manslaughter in 1976 after admitting responsibility for her death 40 years ago.
North Wales Police have referred their investigations to the Independent Police Complaints Commission, saying there had been “significant changes in the way we approach murder investigations”.
Described by her mother Eileen at the time as “a home-loving girl who had everything to live for”, Janet - a pupil at Flint High School - had left her house on January 7 1976 to go to the nearby swimming baths, having sneaked out of the family house in King Edward Drive.
She had left a note saying she would be back by 8.30pm but she never returned.
And after a desperate search, her father Ted called police.
Janet’s body was finally discovered on January 11 of that year.
Up to 10,000 people were interviewed as part of the massive manhunt, and in June 1976 an 18-year-old scrap metal dealer, Noel Jones - formerly of Assembly Road in Coedpoeth - was given 12 years for Janet’s manslaughter.
Eileen Commins, Janet’s sole surviving parent, said in a statement after Hough’s arrest: “I have been aware since May that North Wales Police have been reinvestigating the murder of my daughter in 1976.”
She said the new charges had come as a “great shock.”
