Blaenau Ffestiniog,North Wales - 'Jekyll and Hyde' ex-soldier jailed for attacking elderly woman and her grandson

Justin Brett Ellis, 42, of Church Street, Blaenau Ffestiniog, admitted wounding his partner's mother and the 19-year-old

An ex-soldier who grabbed his partner’s elderly mother so hard that he caused “significant injuries” has been locked up.
Justin Brett Ellis, of Church Street, Blaenau Ffestiniog , admitted wounding the 70-year-old woman and assaulting her grandson at an earlier hearing and apeared before Caernarfon Crown Court today for sentence.
The court heard the 42-year-old had been drinking and gone to Alwen Jones’ flat, where an argument began between Ellis and Liam Jones, the 19-year-old son of Ellis’ partner.
Jailing him for a total of 16 months, Judge David Hale said: “You knew perfectly well the last thing you ought to do when taking these medications was to drink alcohol.
“On this day, that is what you did, and not just one can but as many as six.
“When you went upstairs, you were not in control.”
Prosecutor Ryan Rothwell said police officers had been called to reports of a disturbance in the flat.
“He was angry and agitated and had been challenged by the grandson Liam Jones, who was then punched in the face,” said Mr Rothwell.
“When Mrs Alwen Jones tried to intervene, the defendant grabbed her by the hands and wrists, causing cuts and bruises.”
The court heard Mrs Jones’ forearm injury was so serious that skin hung from it.
She was taken to hospital and it was initially feared that she would need plastic surgery.
In a victim impact statement read to the court, Mrs Jones said her arms, wrists and hands were still painful and doctors had explained to her that skin grafts were not possible for medical reasons.
She described Ellis as a “Jekyll and Hyde” character who was “as nice a person as you would ever want to meet” when sober, but was completely different when drunk.
After being arrested, Ellis told police he had no recollection of the incident due to having drunk up to six cans of strong lager.
He added he was taking medication for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).
Jonathan Austin, defending, said Ellis had joined the Army and been “dreadfully affected” by an incident when he was allegedly abused by others.
He had recently been diagnosed with PTSD and been prescribed medication, and was well aware he should not drink alcohol.
Mr Austin said: “He reacted with horror when shown photographs of the injuries he had caused.”
