Staff at the Express store in Newport are 'shaken' after their ordeal
Police are hunting for a robber who threatened a supermarket security guard with a knife.
The terrifying confrontation happened as the guard attempted to stop a man stealing items from the Tesco Express on Malpas Road in Newport.
It happened on Tuesday at around 7.30pm.
A spokeswoman for Gwent Police said: "A man attempted to steal items from the store and when confronted by a security guard, pulled out a black handled knife."
The offender ran away towards Bath Store, then ran down a small alleyway towards Hollybush Avenue.
No-one was harmed, but police say the staff are understandably shaken.
The spokeswoman added: "Enquiries to locate the offender are currently ongoing and we’re appealing to anyone who may have seen the incident or who may know the identity of this man to come forward."
Police are looking for a man who is described as black, in his late 30s or early 40s and around 5ft 6ins.
He spoke with a London accent and has a distinctive scar on his right cheek.
He was wearing a black jacket with a black hooded top underneath, blue jeans and black trainers.
The offender was seen talking briefly to another man in the store and police are keen to speak to this man.
He is described as white, around 30 years old and wearing a black tracksuit.
Police said: "If this is you, please be reassured that you’re not in any trouble but we think you may be able to help with our enquiries. "
