Clwyd West AM Darren Millar believes school governing bodies should also have the right to introduce CCTV into classrooms
Teachers should wear body cameras in the classroom to fight the blight of assaults in schools an Assembly Member has said.
Clwyd West AM Darren Millar said school governing bodies should have the right to introduce CCTV and body cameras into classrooms.
Mr Millar who is the Welsh Conservatives’ Shadow Education and Children Secretary, made the call in response to figures from the National Union of Teachers showing that staff were victims of more than 1,500 physical and verbal attacks by pupils every day.
Mr Millar said: “Too many teachers are the targets of violence in Welsh schools and that is unacceptable.
“Discipline is a problem in some schools and it is clear that current approaches aren’t always working.
“While the use of CCTV or body cams may appear to be extreme measures, they are something which school governing bodies should have the right to introduce into classrooms if they see fit.”
But Owen Hathway, NUT Cymru policy officer, felt there was little need for this solution.
He said: “While we understand the reasons why this issue is being explored the NUT remain unconvinced that it is the best way forward. Naturally the idea of body cams as a way of ensuring teachers and pupils are protected is appealing. However, we would stress that the situation in our classrooms is not so severe that such an extreme measure needs to be taken.
“We are also conscious of the fact that this could lead to pupils feeling unable to raise sensitive and concerning issues with their teachers.
“What the Nut would suggest is that we continue to build the strong relationships between teachers, pupils and parents to tackle any problematic behaviour and to address any underlying reasons for it.”
