Richard Jason Richards was told to 'get a job and make your mum proud' by a judge
A judge has told a 21-year-old man who drunkenly threatened neighbours in the street with a knife that he needs to give up alcohol and cannabis, get a job, and “make his mum proud”.
Swansea Crown Court heard Richard Jason Richards had drunk the equivalent of litre of vodka on the night of December 27 when he returned to his home in Gowerton and told him mum he was going for a ride on his quad bike.
James Hartson, prosecuting, said his mum stopped him getting on the machine, and a row erupted which ended with Richards standing in the street with a kitchen knife shouting abuse and threats to neighbours.
Police were called to Springfield Close but by the time they arrived Richards had thrown the Sabatier knife away. It has never been recovered.
During the course of his street rant a neighbour’s Audi car was damaged.
Richards, now of Caergynydd Road, Waunarlwydd, pleaded guilty to possessing a bladed article in a public place and to criminal damage to the car when he appeared in the dock.
Dan Griffiths said his client only had a vague recollection of the night in question due to his intoxication.
The advocate said his client lost him temper after his mother had stopped him getting on his quad bike in his drunken state.
He said Richards’ mum was supporting him but had made it clear to her son that “things have to change”.
The court heard Richard’s mum had paid her neighbour £1,500 for the damage to her car, and so no compensation was sought.
A probation report described Richards as “immature”, a situation exasperated by his heavy use of alcohol and cannabis.
Recorder Ifan Wyn Lloyd Jones said anyone would have been frightened by the sight of a drunk man in the street armed with a knife and making threats.
The judge told him he needed to grow up.
He said: “Get rid of the alcohol, get rid of the cannabis, get a job, and make your mum proud.”
He sentenced Richards to a total of six months in prison suspended for 18 months, and made him the subject of a 7pm to 7am curfew for the next three months. Richards will also have to complete a rehabilitation course.
