An inquest heard it was the first time Sefton David Dennis Jones, 41, who had also been drinking, had tried the synthetic cannabis style drug
A man suffered a fit just seconds after smoking “black mamba” and died.
It was the first time Sefton David Dennis Jones, of Benjamin Road, Wrexham, had tried the so-called legal high.
But a combination of the drug and a high amount of alcohol combined to kill him, an inquest in Ruthin heard today.
The 41-year-old died in front of his partner Joanne Jenkins at her home on Y Wern, Caia Park, despite her and a neighbour’s frantic efforts to save him, on June 18 last year.
He had ben out drinking with friends and came back to Ms Jenkins house and asked if could smoke some “black mamba”, a synthetic cannabis style drug, which was legal at the time, which he had in a small bag.
Choking back the tears, Ms Jenkins said: “He seemed fine, he was laughing and joking and then he started jumping around and acting like a monkey. He was making no sense.
“Then he collapsed on the carpet and was turning blue, he wasn’t breathing.”
Ms Jenkins called for an ambulance and tried with the help of a neighbour to resuscitate him, but he died at her home.
It was the first time he had taken the substance, she said.
A post-mortem investigation by Dr Mark Atkinson found he had alcohol equivalent to three and a half times the legal driving limit in his system.
At the time, there was no test for “Black Mamba” at the post-mortem examination.
But samples were sent off which confirmed the substance Mr Jones used was the synthetic style cannabis.
There were also traces of cocaine in Mr Jones body, but they were thought not to have contributed to his death.
Recording a conclusion of alcohol and drug-related death, Coroner for North Wales East and Central, John Gittins, said: “Mr Jones died of a combination of the two.”
He offered his condolences to the family.
