Terry Davies said he would stab employee for subjecting him to "witch-hunt"
A man threatened to kill a Jobcentre worker who carried out an investigation into his benefits because he felt he was being subjected to a “witch-hunt”.
Terry Davies walked into Rhyl Jobcentre in November, asked for the worker Catherine Hall and told a security officer: “She is a ***t and a ******d,” magistrates in Llandudno heard.
Davies, a dad-of-three, said he knew where she lived, adding: “I’m going to go there and stab her.”
Prosecutor Diane Williams said that Ms Hall, who was not working that day, was so frightened by the threat that when she returned to work she had to be escorted to her car by a security officer and eventually moved to another office.
Davies, 31, of Weston Road, Rhyl, pleaded guilty to using threatening behaviour and to a second charge of making a threatening phone call to Ms Hall in December.
Alex Fitzgerald, defending, said that Davies, who had a previous conviction for a similar offence, accepted that some of the things he had said were “genuinely unpleasant”.
Mr Fitzgerald said Davies was suspected of having been working while claiming benefits, which proved to be unsubstantiated, and his interview at the Jobcentre was on the morning that his grandmother passed away.
“He thought there was a witch-hunt because he provided information to support his case. Other information was requested and his benefits were stopped.
“As a result, over Christmas they had to rely on food parcels and emergency loans.”
Mr Fitzgerald said the comments were made in the heat of the moment and not directly to Ms Hall, and Davies did not follow them through.
Davies, now a construction worker, was fined a total of £465 on the two charges and ordered to pay Ms Hall £250 in compensation. He must also pay £85 costs and a surcharge of £30.
The magistrates also made a restraining order prohibiting Davies from contacting Ms Hall indefinitely, and from attending Rhyl Jobcentre in the next 12 months.
