A MAN who carried out an act of “cowardly and drunken violence” in a pub during the Caernarfon Food Festival has been jailed.
Colin Wyn Hughes launched an unprovoked attack on another man at The Anglesey Arms in the town in May last year.
Hughes, aged 35, of Tanyrallt, Rhostryfan, admitted GBH and was jailed for 14 months.
Judge Rhys Rowland said that he delivered a heavy boxing-type punch, which had been a cowardly and drunken act.
The victim, Jack Roberts, had been attending the food festival with friends.
Prosecutor David Mainstone said there were other people there, including families.
At one point, the court heard, Mr Roberts went to the toilets and was in a cubicle when the cubicle door was kicked.
Hughes initially apologised, then banged the door and told him to hurry up. When Mr Roberts came out he was grabbed and pushed.
There was a further incident in the pub and the defendant was ejected.
Mr Roberts was advised to leave by another door.
But outside he was punched in the face, which knocked him backwards and he hit his head on the pavement.
He passed out and the defendant was grabbed by someone to prevent him assaulting him again. Hughes then left, still making threats.
The victim came around and was taken to hospital by ambulance. He was found to have a displaced fracture of the eye socket and concussion.
Mr Mainstone said that it was a completely unprovoked assault.
The judge told Hughes “It was the sort of punch that often leads to tragic consequences.”
The victim was still suffering the effects of it months later.
Hughes, the court heard, had previous convictions for 74 offences and had been previously jailed for violence.
Defending barrister Owen Edwards said Hughes had changed from a young man who was constantly in trouble to an older man who was hardly ever in trouble.
