POLICE in Swansea are appealing for information to help solve the "appalling" crime of the theft of a charity collection box.
The incident, which saw a Wales Air Ambulance cash collection box taken from the counter of a commercial garage in Gorseinon, took place sometime on Monday or in the early hours of Tuesday.
It is thought someone entered the reception area and stole the collection box from a counter while the owner was working on a vehicle in the main garage.
The theft was condemned on Facebook and resulted in more than 9,000 'shares', with many expressing disgust that someone could steal from a charity.
The Wales Air Ambulance runs entirely on donations and in order to provide emergency air cover for those who face life-threatening illness or injuries it requires over £6.5million a year.
Inspector Ralph Harris, of South Wales Police, said: "This is a particularly appalling crime considering the money taken was intended for the Welsh Air Ambulance. I would encourage anyone with information to come forward and report it to police."
Wales Air Ambulance fundraising manager Mark Stevens condemned the theft.
'Supporters have kindly put their hands in their pockets'
He said: "We're really upset to hear a collection tin in aid of the charity has been stolen. Supporters have kindly put their hands in their pockets to make a donation, which is crucial to keep the helicopters flying.
"Wales Air Ambulance relies entirely on donations to raise £6.5million each year to fund the four aircraft. Any information to help the police in this matter will be gratefully received."
The incident occurred between 9.30am on Monday, January 2, and 9.30am on Tuesday, January 3, at the David Coe Garage, Cecil Road in Gorseinon.
Anyone with information is asked to call police on 101 or contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 quoting occurrence: 1700002588
