Police step up patrols after the woman, her partner and two young children had to flee home when three cars at two properties were set alight
A mum today told how her family could have been killed after flames spread to her home following car arson attacks in Wrexham this morning.
Two young girls aged six and three were sleeping upstairs along with their mum and dad on Maes Hyfryd, Rhosrobin.
Then arsonists torched their two Vauxhall Astras parked in the drive outside shortly before 5am, which spread to the front door.
The mum heard crackling, spotted flames and smoke coming in and they managed to escape into the back garden before they were seriously injured or killed.
It badly damaged the front door and smoke stained the outside the house.
Minutes later another car, a VW Golf, was set alight by firebugs on Briarswood just around the corner.
North Wales Police said they were “very serious incidents” and appealed for witnesses or anybody with information to come forward.
The mum on lives in the Wales and West Housing Association house on Maes Hyfyrd, who did not wish to be named, said: “If it had been five minutes longer before I spotted the smoke then we could have died as the front door is right next to the stairs.
“I screamed ‘get the kids out’ and me and my partner got outside onto the back garden and called the fire service.
“I could hear tyres popping and glass cracking, it really frightened our two daughters.
“The police told us it was a random attack rather than us being targeted.
“The people who did this may think its a joke, but its not funny, they could have killed us.”
Andrew Richards, Commercial Manager for Wales and West Housing, said: “We have booked them into a local hotel until it is safe for them to return to their home.
“In the meantime, we aim to repair the damage to the front of the house within seven days, which includes installing new windows and front door, new roofline goods and canopy, replacement sink waste pipe, vent covers and decoration to the hallway.
“The facing brickwork to the frontage will also be thoroughly cleaned as it has been badly stained by smoke damage.”
North Wales Fire and Rescue Service Community Safety Manager for Wrexham and Flintshire, Paul Scott, said: “This type of irresponsible behaviour is completely unacceptable, and it was very fortunate that no one was hurt, especially considering the proximity of the fires to the properties.”
Det Chief Insp Neil Harrison said: “These were very serious incidents and fortunately no one was hurt.
“I am appealing to anyone who may have witnessed any suspicious behaviour in or around the area to come forward.”
“Meanwhile there will be high visibility police activity in the area as we carry out crime scene investigations and house to house enquiries. We shall also be deploying reassurance patrols.”
If anyone can help the police investigation call 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously 0800 555 111, quoting reference V008427.
