Wrexham,North Wales - Burglars who left 89-year-old victim too scared to go home are jailed

Ricky Roberts, of Holborn Crescent, Brynteg, and Kieran Evans, of Aston Grove, stole watches worth more than £25,000 in another burglary

A drug addict who burgled a number of houses in the Wrexham area within a few months of his release from prison has been jailed for five years – after he was caught thanks to his distinctive trainers.
Ricky Roberts, 33, was responsible for five house burglaries and one attempted burglary.
Co-defendant Kieran Evans, 33, who claimed to have been the look-out, was jailed for three years and 10 months after he admitted two burglaries, an attempted burglary and a handling offence.
Mold Crown Court heard how detached houses in their own grounds had been targeted, some of them in quiet areas, and two of the burglaries occurred while the owners were away on holiday.
One house was burgled while the 89-year-old victim was ill in hospital, and she was now too frightened to return to the house in which she had lived for more than 60 years.
In another burglary, watches valued at more than £25,000 were taken.
Roberts, of Holborn Crescent in Brynteg, Wrexham, and Evans, of Aston Grove in Wrexham , admitted all charges.
Prosecuting barrister Anna Pope said that, in May of last year, Roberts burgled a house in Brynteg and stole jewellery, including items of sentimental value.
They both attempted to burgle one house in Sontley Road, which was caught on CCTV, before they went on to burgle a neighbouring property while the owners were away on holiday.
Two televisions, an expensive watch and other property were taken.
The home of the elderly lady was burgled in Beechley Road in Wrexham , and a victim impact statement showed she had been affected to such an extent that she would rather sell her home and go to a nursing home, which had caused considerable distress to her family.
Evans had handled a remote-controlled helicopter from one burglary, and his fingerprints were found on it.
In Ruabon Road, they burgled a house where watches valued at £25,000 were taken, along with a large quantity of jewellery.
Roberts also burgled a house in multiple occupation in Bradley Road, and was traced thanks to his distinctive Adidas trainers and the marks they had left behind.
Defending barrister Kim Halsall, for Roberts, who had previous convictions for 77 offences, said that he was released from prison in February and then went back to taking drugs.
But, while on remand, he was receiving counselling from Narcotics Anonymous and was on a drug recovery programme. He was now on a reducing methadone prescription.
Philip Tully, for Evans, who had 111 previous convictions, said that while he accepted his responsibility in the burglaries his role had been as a look-out for Roberts.
He offended over a two-day period in the summer and had taken steps to rid himself of his addiction. He had shown genuine remorse and had an insight into the effect of his behaviour on others.
Judge Huw Rees said: “The two of you should be thoroughly ashamed.”
They had burgled other people’s homes in order to feed their drug addictions.
The court heard Evans had written an eloquent letter to the judge in which he told how he was trapped in an addiction to heroin and was living day to day, chasing the drug.
Following the sentencing, a spokesperson for North Wales Police said that, due to an increase in burglaries in the Brynteg and Hightown areas of Wrexham during the summer of 2016, the force launched Operation Bazaar.
Detective Inspector Mark Hughes said: “We would like to thank the local community for their support and wish to reassure residents that we take house burglaries extremely seriously.

"This demonstrates our continued commitment to pursuing those who commit this type of offence.”
