Colwyn Bay,North Wales - Old Colwyn murderer who smothered old lady as he robbed her is dead

Robert John Kirkham was back in jail having been found guilty of rape and sexual assault of a young boy

An Old Colwyn murderer who was sent back to prison after raping a teenage boy has died in prison.
Robert John Kirkham, 66, who suffocated an elderly lady while he was stealing from her home in the 1980s, was found at Fazakerley prison on Merseyside.
He had been in jail since 1999, when he was convicted of sexual assault on a young boy. He was made to serve out the remainder of his prison term, from which he'd been released on licence.
After serving another 12 years, he was released in 2011.
But when in 2013 a new victim came forward to claim he had been raped and sexually assaulted in 1996 in the Wrexham area while Kirkham was out on licence, the former chef was jailed again .
In total, Kirkham, formerly of Old Colwyn , served 27 years behind bars.
At his sentencing, Judge Niclas Parry said he had an “unhealthy interest in young boys” and gave him a nine-year sentence for the rape and 12 months for the indecent assaults.
His victim was said to be in his early teens and vulnerable because of his age, and Kirkham had created opportunities to be alone with him.
Today, an inquest into his death in Liverpool heard he had died from metastatic renal cancer.
Coroner Anita Bhardwaj was told he was given palliative care in a healthcare wing from December 16, and a do not resuscitate (DNR) order was put in place after his condition deteriorated and he died on January 1.
Ms Bhardwaj recorded a verdict that Kirkham died from natural causes.
The inquest heard his relatives had chosen not to attend the hearing but were happy with the care given to him at the prison.
After Kirkham was sentenced in 2014, North Wales Police described him as a “predator who abused the vulnerability and trust of a young boy.”
At the time, DI Kelly Isaacs of Amethyst Team (North Wales Police Dedicated Sexual Offences Team), said: “It’s important the public know that victims of crime will receive the full support of North Wales Police and its partner agencies regardless of the passage of time between offence and reporting. It is never too late to seek justice.”
