Stephan O'Donovan, 26, from Cardiff, was sentenced to a total of 44 months imprisonment after pleading guilty to three offences
A bungling burglar was caught after he left a Yazoo bottle at the crime scene with his DNA on it. Stephan O’Donovan, 26, from Cardiff , was sentenced at Cardiff Crown Court after pleading guilty to three offences.
Police said he left blood, fingerprints and footprints at the scenes of crimes, which included burglaries in Adamsdown and St Mellons , one of which was his own neighbour’s house.
On November 28 police were called to Jenkins Way, St Mellons, where a kitchen window had been smashed and intruders had gone inside.
A day later, a woman in Heol Trostre, St Mellons, called police when she woke up to discover that her TV and other property had been stolen.
Police said at the first house, the defendant had left fingerprints on the inside of the window, and at the second house, he had left his fingerprints and footwear marks in the conservatory where he had removed a pane of glass to get in.
Police eventually caught up with O’Donovan while making inquiries into a robbery in Fort Street, Broadway, on November 19.
He was caught on CCTV in a nearby shop at the same time as the victim, and he purchased a bottle of Yazoo milkshake which he left at the scene of the crime.
When sent for testing, the swabs taken from the bottle came back with the DNA of O’Donovan.
Officers found the defendant asleep on a sofa while checking a flat in Ashwood Court, and he was taken into custody and questioned in connection with all three offences.
'Reckless crime spree'
O’Donovan, of Heol Trostre, was sentenced to a total of 44 months imprisonment for one count of robbery and two of burglary.
He was also ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £170.
Speaking after the sentencing, Detective Constable Leeann Saunders said: “Stephan O’Donovan has been given a significant prison sentence which reflects the seriousness of his crimes and the absolute contempt that he has shown innocent neighbours and members of the public during his reckless crime spree.
“People can feel safer now that he is behind bars, and unable to force the misery of being a victim of a crime upon innocent, law-abiding people.
“This was the result of some good work between detectives and crime scene investigators.”
