Richard Gwion Jones, 27, of Maen Gwyn, Trawsfynydd, followed his victim in a van and forced him to pull over before attacking him
A builder who led an assault on his sister’s ex-partner hit him with a golf club and stabbed him in the leg with the shaft when it broke, a court heard.
Richard Gwion Jones, 27, of Maen Gwyn, Trawsfynydd , Gwynedd, had pleaded guilty to causing grievous bodily harm to William Barker at Bronaber in Trawsfynydd in February last year.
He appeared for sentencing today at Caernarfon Crown Court.
Prosecutor Elen Owen said the victim and his girlfriend had gone to the Cross Foxes pub in Trawsfynydd on the evening of February 13 to get cigarette papers.
She had gone into the pub and there were two incidents of minor violence where Jones was present but not involved.
After returning to their caravan home, the victim decided to go back to the village on his own, but turned back because he had forgotten his money.
Miss Owen said he was then followed by a white van which forced him to pull over.
Jones then got out of the passenger door and threw an object at the victim, who tried to get away from his attackers but was again blocked further along the road.
Miss Owen said: “Gwion Jones then attacked him with a golf club. He hit him in his legs and face and then he fell to the floor.
“Gwion Jones continued with the assault until the golf club broke. He then used the stem to stab his leg, leaving him with a puncture wound which required stitches, and he was left unconscious.”
The victim was punched and left with bruising to the head, shoulders, arms and legs.
He suffered permanent scarring, had reduced mobility and suffered pain on a daily basis, the court heard.
Miss Owen said Jones had one previous conviction for an unprovoked punch on a man in a street in Bala in 2009.
Defending barrister Jonathan Austin said: “He’s pleaded guilty at the first opportunity at crown court.
“There is background but no excuse whatsoever for what happened on that night, when he took the law into his own hands.”
Mr Austin said Jones had been a victim of an assault by Mr Barker previously, but he had not been paid “a penny” in compensation.
He read a reference from Jones’ former headteacher Dewi Lake, who described him as “a good student and very pleasant”.
Mr Austin said that, since admitting the offence, Jones had lost his job at Trawsfynydd nuclear power station and now worked for Williams Homes in Bala.
“There appears to be some remorse,” he said.
Addressing Jones, Her Honour Judge Tracey Lloyd-Clarke said Mr Barker had previously been in a relationship with Jones’ sister Sioned and they had a young boy.
The judge said: “That relationship ended. There had been from your family allegations of violence by Mr Barker towards your sister, and there had been a common assault by Mr Barker towards you.”
She said that, on the night of the assault, Mr Barker had set off for the second time to Trawsfynydd to put maintenance money through Jones’ sister’s door.
Jones had gone home, taken his father’s van, a golf club and three accomplices, and had set off after Mr Barker in the early hours of February 14, she said.
Sentencing Jones to 31 months in jail, she said: “This was an extremely serious incident - a pre-planned group attack by a gang of men, one of whom was armed with a weapon on a man in an isolated place.”
